What Does Repressurising A Boiler Mean?

Repressurising a boiler simply means adding water back into the sealed heating system so the pressure returns to the correct operating range.

On most modern boilers, that’s done using a filling loop, and the target pressure is usually around 1 to 1.5 bar when the system is cold. If pressure drops too low, the boiler may stop working properly or shut down as a safety measure.

What Pressure Should My Boiler Be?

For most combi and system boilers, the pressure should sit around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold.

If your gauge is below 1 bar, the system is usually too low and may need topping up. If it climbs too high after filling, you may need to bleed a radiator or get the system checked.

How To Repressurise A Boiler Safely

Before you do anything, turn the boiler off and let it cool down.

The usual process is:

  1. Turn the boiler off and wait for it to cool.
  2. Find the filling loop, often a silver braided hose or an integrated filling device underneath the boiler.
  3. Open the valve or valves slowly.

How To Repressurise A Worcester Boiler

Worcester boilers can vary by model, but many use either a filling key, a blue lever, or an external filling loop.

On some Worcester models, you insert the filling key underneath the boiler, lock it into place, and then open the valve slowly until the pressure reaches the correct level. Other Worcester boilers use a lever or braided hose setup instead, so the exact method depends on the model.

How To Repressurise A Viessmann Boiler

Viessmann boilers still follow the same basic principle as most sealed systems. You locate the filling device, add water gradually, and stop when the pressure reaches the recommended range.

Some Viessmann models have an integrated filling loop, while others use a more standard hose arrangement underneath the boiler. If the pressure is corrected and the boiler still doesn’t fire up properly, there may be a fault code or another issue that needs checking.

How To Repressurise A Vaillant Boiler

Vaillant boilers often use an internal filling loop with small levers or valves underneath the boiler rather than a separate silver hose.

The process is still straightforward: turn the boiler off, open the filling device slowly, watch the gauge, and stop when it reaches the correct pressure. Many Vaillant boilers work best around 1.2 to 1.5 bar when cold, but always go by the instructions for your specific model.

How To Repressurise An Ideal Boiler

Ideal boilers are commonly found with either a braided filling loop or a fixed filling link with blue knobs underneath.

With most Ideal boilers, you open the filling loop valves slowly and let cold mains water enter the system until the gauge returns to the normal range. Then you close the valves fully and restart the boiler if needed.

If you’ve got an Ideal Logic boiler, low pressure faults are especially common after bleeding radiators or after a small pressure drop over time.

How To Repressurise A Baxi Boiler

Many Baxi boilers use a filling loop underneath the boiler, often with a blue, black, or grey handle.

To repressurise a Baxi boiler, you normally turn the valve slowly, let water into the system, and watch the gauge until it reaches around 1 to 1.5 bar. Once there, close the valve properly and check the boiler fires up as normal.

If your Baxi keeps losing pressure after topping up, there’s probably another issue behind it.

How To Repressurise A Glow-worm Boiler

Glow-worm boilers are usually straightforward to top up. Many have a filling loop underneath the boiler, while some older models use a filling key instead.

In most cases, you turn the boiler off, let it cool, open the valves slowly, and stop when the pressure reaches 1 to 1.5 bar. Some Glow-worm boilers may go through a short purge or reset cycle afterwards, so slight display changes straight after topping up aren’t always unusual.

Why Does Boiler Pressure Drop In The First Place?

What Not To Do
