Westfield Community Centre – Foxglove School
Scope of Work
This project involved the complete installation of new mechanical services for a school refurbishment, delivering a modern, energy-efficient heating system alongside new domestic water and sanitary installations. Our scope included the design coordination, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of all mechanical services from the plantroom through to the final fixtures.
Heating Plant Installation
A new energy-efficient boiler plant was installed within the existing below-ground plantroom, featuring a cascade arrangement of two Ideal Evomax 2 gas-fired boilers complete with:
- Low-height boiler frames
- Low loss header
- Interconnecting pipework
- Gas train
- Cascade flue system
The installation provides reliable, high-efficiency heating while offering improved resilience through boiler sequencing.
Flue System
A twin-wall insulated stainless steel flue system was installed from the new boiler cascade to the existing brick chimney, incorporating:
- Condensate drain
- Inspection tee
- Approved terminal cowl
The system was designed to ensure safe and compliant operation of the new heating plant.
Plantroom Services
The plantroom was fully equipped with new mechanical services including:
- Heating and domestic hot water circulation pumps
- Magnetic filtration
- Air separation
- Stainless steel dosing pot
- Safety valves
- Expansion vessel
- Domestic hot water plate heat exchanger
- Variable temperature mixing valves
Heavy-duty pipework systems were installed to provide a robust and reliable distribution network throughout the building.
Gas Installation
A new gas distribution system was installed from the existing incoming supply, including:
- Isolation valves
- Gas solenoid valve
- Gas check meter
- Purge and test points
All gas pipework was finished in accordance with industry standards for clear identification.
Heating Controls
A complete controls package was installed to maximise system efficiency and safety, including:
- Three-port motorised valves
- Gas solenoid valves
- Fire safety sensors
- Temperature sensors and thermostats
- Central control panel with run/fault indication and manual override functionality
Heating Distribution
New low surface temperature (LST) radiators were installed throughout the school, complete with thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) and lockshield valves for effective room-by-room temperature control.
Pre-insulated MLCP pipework was installed within ceiling voids and stud partitions where possible, complete with isolation and drain valves to simplify future maintenance.
Domestic Water Services
New domestic hot and cold water services were installed to serve:
- Toilet facilities
- Shower areas
- Science classrooms
- Kitchen facilities
- Corridor wash areas
The installation also included secondary hot water return pipework serving both the ground and first floors to maintain efficient hot water circulation.
Soil & Waste Installation
The project included first-fix installation of new soil and waste systems comprising:
- Plastic soil stacks
- Stub stacks where required
All systems were installed ready for final sanitaryware connections.
Sanitaryware Installation
Our team installed all sanitaryware including:
- WCs
- Wash hand basins
- Shower trays
- Shower enclosures
- Thermostatic bar showers
Mechanical service connections were also provided for science laboratory sinks, kitchen sinks and corridor sinks, ready for final fit-out.
Testing & Commissioning
All mechanical services underwent comprehensive testing and commissioning to ensure full compliance and optimal performance, including:
- System flushing and cleaning
- Pressure testing
- Chemical inhibitor dosing
- Gas commissioning
- Manufacturer’s boiler commissioning
- Water services commissioning
- Blending valve testing
Project Documentation
Upon completion, a full project handover package was provided, including:
- A3 As-Fitted Drawings
- Operation & Maintenance Manuals
- Test and Commissioning Certificates
The completed installation provides the school with a modern, efficient and reliable mechanical services system, designed to deliver long-term performance, ease of maintenance and improved energy efficiency for staff and students alike.
